Southampton Scout troop appeal for help after base set alight

Scout and Guide meetings have been cancelled and camping holidays are under threat after arsonists set fire to a scout hall in Southampton causing £50,000 worth of damage.

The19th Itchen North Scout Group in Thornhill was broken into and a trailer was set on fire, with the flames spread to the building.

More than 120 boys and girls are now without anywhere to meet and Scout leaders are appealing for help.

The fire started on Monday night in a trailer, spreading to a container and parts of the main Scout hut.

Camping gear was among the items destroyed in the fire.

Sam Tudjaroglu, Group Scout leader says: "It's either melted or everything destroyed. Without this there's no way we can take the children camping. We've lost all the tables, the fridges, the cookers, the cutlery, burners lights, seating."

The scout group is appealing for camping equipment so children can go on planned trips to the New Forest and help replacing the roof and securing the fence.
