Safety concerns over region's 'smart' motorways

The AA - based in Basingstoke - is meeting transport ministers to demand safety improvements on the region's new smart motorways, where the hard shoulder is being turned into a running lane.

They say there are not enough - emergency places - to stop - if drivers break down. Highways England insist the scheme is safe - and is speeding up traffic. Part of the M3 in Hampshire and Surrey is a Smart Motorway - and work is underway on the M27 - M23 and M4.

It follows an investigation by ITV News Meridian -last week which revealed warning signs on the M3 had more than 2.500 faults in two years.
