Man arrested on suspicion of murder after body found in wheelie-bin in Lewes

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was discovered dumped in a wheelie-bin in East Sussex.

Her remains were found by a dog walker at the edge of a recreation ground off Landport Road in Lewes, at 12.30pm on Wednesday.

A Sussex Police spokesman said an examination of the body has shown the victim suffered a "significant head injury" and had been left in the bin for up to a month.

He added a post-mortem examination would be carried out to establish a cause of death.

A 41-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.

The force spokesman said: "The death was initially treated as unexplained but examination of the body has shown a significant head injury and the matter is now being treated as murder."

Sadly, early indications are that the body had been at the location for some time, possibly since mid-October.

"We believe that we know who the woman was and her next of kin have now been informed.

"We are very keen to hear from anyone who may be missing a green wheelie-bin or who may have seen it lying in undergrowth at the scene over the last few weeks but thought no more of it.

"There were a considerable number of people in the area for one of the Bonfire Night firework displays and we would particularly like to hear from them if they saw anything.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone wheeling a bin in the area of Landport Road, Stansfield Road, Arundel Green or nearby at any time over the last three to four weeks."
