The M4 in Berkshire shuts as work continues on converting it to a smart motorway

The M4 in Berkshire will be closed for up to 28 weekends this year - that's closures for more weekends than its open. It's as work on the biggest smart motorway in the country begins its most disruptive stage of work.

The highly controversial scheme involves having 11 bridges demolished as part of the £848m project, due to open in 2022.

The entire 32 mile section from Heathrow to Theale at junction twelve is having its hard shoulder replaced with a running lane.

Highways England says its needed to speed up traffic on one of the regions most congested roads.
