Bursledon: Three remain in hospital following collision involving car outside Tesco

Emergency services respond to an incident outside the Tesco Superstore at Bursledon.

Three people remain in hospital following an incident involving a vehicle outside a Tesco in a Hampshire village.

Emergency services say two women were injured outside the supermarket in Bursledon on Wednesday afternoon (1 December).

A woman in her 30s sustained life threatening injuries, and a woman in her 50s sustained serious injuries.

A man in his 70s sustained minor injuries.

An eyewitness to the incident has told ITV Meridian she believes a person became trapped under a vehicle in a disabled car parking area.

Charlie Derrick was at the Tesco Extra store this afternoon and described seeing the aftermath. She said "I was just exiting the store, and when I came out a lady came rushing past asking people to call the medics.

"I saw a few police cars arriving at the scene and then staff started barricading the doors to the shop, asking people to leave via the entrance. They were closing the store down.

"I have a disabled child and was parked in the disabled bays, which is quite near where the incident happened.

"There was a lady underneath a vehicle and the area was being cleared. I was asked to move my vehicle backwards, so the fire brigade could come in. The emergency services were there in a matter of minutes"

In a statement a spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: “We were called at 3.03pm today (1 December) to reports of a serious collision in the car park next to Tesco in Hamble Lane, Bursledon.

“Injuries have been reported to us. The car park has been closed and we remain at the scene.”

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) added: "We were called at 15:01 to Hamble Lane to reports of a car that had struck pedestrians. 

"We sent to the scene three ambulance crews, two paramedic officers, BASICs, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

"Two patients sustained serious injuries and one sustained non life threatening injuries as a result of the collision," the SCAS spokesperson added.

"They were assessing and treating three patients all of which have been taken to University Hospital Southampton by land ambulance. 

"Two patients sustained serious injuries and one sustained non life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue said, "We were called to reports of a serious collision in the car park of a supermarket in Bursledon at 15:07 today and two fire engines from Hightown attended.

"Firefighters worked alongside Police and ambulance colleagues and our crews have now left the scene."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear that three pedestrians have been injured in the car park of our Bursledon Extra store. The store has now reopened following a brief closure."
