A man has died after being hit by a Sussex Police car in Peacehaven.
The 27-year old victim, who was on the road, sustained serious injuries after being hit by the marked vehicle near the junction of Dorothy Avenue on the A259.
There was a heavy response from the emergency services to the collision which happened at around 11:30pm on Saturday night.
As the collision involved a police vehicle, the matter has been referred to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who will carry out an independent investigation.
Chief Superintendent Jo Banks said: "This is a tragic incident and we are fully supporting the IOPC investigation. We want to thank drivers and residents for their patience while the A259 South Coast Road was closed."
The coastal road reopened at around 1pm on Sunday after being closed in both directions but the junction of Bramber Avenue remained closed into the afternoon as police enquiries continue.
Officers are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to email firstname.lastname@example.org quoting Operation Ambleside.
