The Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will visit Oxford later for the first time in 24 years.

The Nobel Laureate left her family in Oxford in 1988 to nurse her ill mother. It was a trip which started her non violent campaign for democracy and human rights. She refused to leave Burma even to say goodbye to her husband, the Oxford academic Michael Aris who died from cancer in 1999.
