Thames Valley Police statement

Thames Valley Police have arrested a man after he allegedly drove the wrong way down the M40 southbound between High Wycombe and Stokenchurch.

At 7:38 this morning we received reports from members of the public that a man was driving at speed the wrong way down the M40 southbound. The driver of a Mazda 6 motorcar was driving at upwards of 70 mph in the 3rd lane of the motorway. As a result of his driving he collided with 6 vehicles including a people carrier, a Mercedes and Vauxhall Astra. No one was injured as a result of these collisions and we want to thank members of the public who responded to the situation by quickly getting into the left hand lane of the motorway so that transport officers could attend.

A man is currently in custody in connection with this incident and the motorway is now flowing freely.

Eyewitness tells of near miss

An eyewitness has told ITV Meridian that he froze when faced with a man driving his car at speed the wrong way down the M40.

This morning travelling down the M40 I had to make that choice!

Travelling at speed in the middle lane I was confronted coming around the bend by what looked like a green jag travelling head-on at well over 100mph.

I had a second to choose do I go left or do I go right, I froze and he went right, thank God I froze!

I was then faced with carnage of the M40, cars all over the place, big smash up to say High Wycombe. I hope the Police get him!
