Post election what next for the Lib Dems in the South?

It was an incredible night for the Tories in the Meridian West area, with the party taking four seats from the Lib Dems and one from Labour.

The Tory heartland is now bluer than ever - Labour hold just two seats, the Greens - just one.

However, the most noticeable difference is that there is no longer any Liberal Democrat presence in the region after a crushing defeat at the polls for the party.

The biggest surprises came at two of their safest constituencies. Recently elected Mike Thornton was ousted by the Tories, and Sussex MP Norman Baker was forced out of his seat after more than 18 years in post. Richard Slee has our report.

A look at the election in the Meridian West area

The political picture in the Meridian West area is a blanket of blue. The Tories have triumphed in the General Election of 2015 and the Liberal Democrats have been wiped out in the South.

A familiar face is among the new intake at Westminster - there was victory for the former leader of Southampton City Council, Royston Smith. The Conservative politician once wrestled a gunman on board a submarine. He has now beaten his Labour rival to become the new MP for Southampton Itchen. Sally Simmonds reports.
