Women will no long be able to give birth at midwife led units in Dover and Canterbury by the end of the year. Health bosses made the decision at a meeting this morning. Instead money will be spent on expanding maternity services in Ashford and Margate.
A decision is expected today on the future of two midwife led birthing centres in Dover and Canterbury. Health bosses say there has been a reduction in the number of women choosing to have their babies at the centres over the last 5 years.
Health chiefs say more mothers are choosing to give birth at the William Harvey hospital in Ashford instead. Today's meeting is taking place at the River Centre in Tonbridge.
A new study by researchers from Essex and Oxford universities has found that babies who are fed on demand are more likely to have a higher IQ and perform better at school. However there are calls for further research, since this is the first study of its kind.
