The Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne in Sussex has one of the most extensive collections in the South East. It houses more than 4,000 works of art and hosts more than 100,000 visitors annually.
However staff say that plans to halve the grant it receives from the local authority could jeopardise the Towner's future. The local authority - Eastbourne Borough Council, says that in harsh economic times it has to protect frontline public services. Malcolm Shaw reports.
