Protecting Winchester from the River Itchen

A months worth of rain over the next few days and gale force winds of up to 70 miles per hour. Another violent winter storm is battering the South causing damage and hampering efforts to help areas at risk of flooding.

All our main rivers are on flood warning alert - and today the Prime Minister said it would get worse before it gets better.

Teams have spent the day desperately trying to protect Winchester from the force of the River Itchen.

Cranes have been used to place huge sandbags weighing one tonne each into the river near the M3 to restrict its flow and slow the water. Christine Alsford reports.
