School building destroyed by fire

A fire has destroyed a school building on the Isle of Wight. Around forty firefighters have spent the night at the Island Learning Centre - which was Broadlea Primary School. It's thought a minibus caught fire and then spread to the building. Police are still at the scene.

School fire now being treated as arson

Police are appealing for witnesses following a suspected arson at The Island Learning Centre, at Berry Hill, Sandown on the Isle of Wight early this morning.

Officers were called to the scene at around 12.25am after a school mini bus caught fire, which spread to the school, causing extensive damage to the whole building.

DI John Stirling, who is investigating the incident, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the fire, or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, between 11.30pm last night (July 16) and 12.15am this morning (July 16).”

Police have this morning been carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the area of the school.
