Southern Water fined £2m for "catastrophic" beach pollution

Southern Water has been fined £2,000,000 after untreated sewage was pumped onto a beach in Margate.

A judge has called the pollution "catastrophic" saying the company was slow to react and failed to get to grips with the situation. The sewage leaks in 2012 and 2014, which closed several beaches, were blamed on faulty pumps. This resulted in untreated and partially-screened sewage, also containing sanitary items and sewage related debris, being pumped into the adjacent beach and sea.
