Sussex peer Baronees Cumberlege is taking legal action against her own government to to try to stop a development in the village of Newick.

At a public meeting last night she joined 240 local residents who voted to do whatever is possible to reverse a decison on 50 new houses. .

She's launched an appeal at her own expense. It's a case that is being watched by other communities across the country.

The legal battle involves the rejection by the government of a local neighbourhood plan in which nearly 90% of the village agreed to a series of housing developments. The Baroness says the Secretary of State is ignoring local democracy and building in an area rejected by residents.

Baroness Cumberlege of Newick has lived in the village for years.
