Small fire started near newborn baby's body

More heartbreaking details have been released about the discovery of a baby girl's body at a park in Sheerness.

Kent Police have told Meridian Tonight they believe the baby to have been newly born.

The identity and age of the girl is not currently known, and neither is the cause of death

Her remains were found in Broadway on Saturday afternoon.

Police have also revealed that the remnants of a small fire were located at the scene and it is believed this was started between 10am and 12.30pm, shortly before the body was found.

Police gave their first interviews this afternoon:

‘We’re very keen to locate the mother of this girl as we are concerned for her wellbeing and want to make sure she is receiving the necessary emotional and medical support.

‘We also want to hear from anyone who was in Broadway in the late morning of 4 March. Even if someone thinks what they saw isn’t important, the smallest amount of information could be crucial to us finding out how and why this happened.

‘Those that do come forward should know that the information will be handled in a sensitive way.
