Lifeguards from Selsey were called to search for two surfers reported missing in stormy seas close to Bognor Pier.
The rescue mission happened during Saturday's dangerous weather caused by Storm Brian.
Lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter were launched around 2pm in weather described by the RNLI as 'wind south westerly force 8-9 in rain showers, sea state rough'.
After extensive searches, they were unable to find the missing surfers.
At approximately 3.30pm two surfers who'd been surfing earlier in the day identified themselves to police on the scene after hearing the search was going on.
After comparing times it was concluded they were the two people reported and the search was called off.
