Apple has unveiled its new iPad Air, a new operating system and new computers at a launch event in San Francisco.

New iPad Air 'lightest full-sized tablet in the world'

Apple's new iPad Air will be available in the UK on November 1, while the iPad mini will be out later in November.

iPad Air:

  • 9.7-inch retina display and A7 chip inside, with over a billion transistors
  • Twofold increase in rendering, twice as fast at opening files and double the graphics performance of the iPad 4
  • Apple claims it will be 'the lightest full-sized tablet in the world'

iPad mini:

  • Up to four times faster at graphics than the first generation model
  • Double the WiFi speed
  • Expanded support for broadband wireless networks

They will both be available in silver and white or grey and black.

Apple's new iPad mini with retina display will be available later in November, retailing at £319 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.

The 32GB model is expected to cost £399, while the 64GB model will retail at £479. The 128GB version will be available at £559.

The iPad mini comes in silver or space grey and all prices include VAT.

Apple's new top-of-the-range tablet, the iPad Air, will be available from 1 November for a suggested retail price of £399 for the 16GB model.

The 32GB model will retail at £479, while the 64GB model is expected to cost £559.

The 128GB iPad Air is priced at £639. All prices include VAT.

Apple to launch new iPad mini 2

Apple's second tablet launch of the day is a the iPad mini 2.

The tablet has a retina display - the term used by Apple for liquid crystal displays with high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance.

It will be available in silver and white as well as space-grey and black. The new tablet will be priced at $399 for 16GB with Wi-Fi, while the original iPad mini will be available for $299, the company says.

Apple's new 13-inch MacBook is "blazing fast" and "highly recyclable", Apple's head of marketing Philip Schiller has claimed.

Schiller quotes Stuart Price, producer for Lady Gaga and the Killers, who says the Mac Pro is "the perfect device for the recording studio."

The new operating system for Apple's Mac computers is now available free of charge, Apple has announced.

"The days of spending hundreds of dollars to get more out of your computer are over, " Craig Federighi, Apple Inc. Senior Vice President of Software Engineering told an audience at an Apple product event in San Francisco.

Apple has kicked off a product event at which the company is expected to introduce slimmer, faster iPads in time for the holidays.

The new tablets will face stiff competition, with Microsoft Corp, Nokia and Inc all plugging rival devices in coming months.

Apple, which jumpstarted the tablet computing market in 2010 with the first iPad, has already come under increasing pressure from cheaper devices from Amazon's Kindle Fire to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Note.
