A 19-year-old man who was killed during a shooting at the Tennessee State University campus in Nashville was "not enrolled at the school", according to the university's spokeswoman.
It has not yet been confirmed whether two women who are being treated in hospital for gunshot wounds, or the shooter, were students.
Police said the shooting happened just before 11pm local time and "appeared to have stemmed from a dispute over a dice game in an outdoor courtyard".
