Drivers who tailgait or lane-hog will face tougher fines as changes to police powers to issue fixed penalty notices are brought in today.

Dodgy drivers could be fined £100 and have three penalty points slapped on their license if they are found hogging the middle lane of the motorway or driving too close to the vehicle in front of them.

The most serious cases of bad driving will go to the courts but police will be able to offer educational training as an alternative for the penalty points.
