Police in Finland have found five badly-decomposed bodies of babies in the basement of a woman's home in Finland.

A 35-year-old married woman with children has been arrested after the discovery of the foetuses in rotten-smelling packages at her apartment in Oulu.

Police say the woman told them she had given birth to the children at the home five to 10 years ago.

"We are investigating the case as a homicide as the fetuses are so close to full term that under normal conditions they would have been viable to survive," Detective Inspector Seppo Leinonen Leinonen told Reuters.

The family have been in the home for only a few months, and police believe the remains may have been brought from a previous residence.
