European rescue teams pulled 2,300 migrants and refugees to safety from overloaded boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean on Saturday.
A total of 17 rubber dinghies and one small boat were intercepted in the operation led by the Italian coastguard and also involving Spanish and Irish vessels.
The coast guard did not give any details of the nationalities of those rescued.
