James Eggo phoned emergency services when he noticed his mum's lips turning blue.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said the occupants of the address suspected the man had been wandering around lost all night.

Police said the woman was a passenger in the ambulance when it was involved in a collision with a red Seat car on the A19 near Houghton-le-Spring.
