The new carriages should start arriving in the North East later this year, before being brought into service in 2023.

Nexus has said people should travel only if it is absolutely necessary. If they do, they should allow plenty of time, carry water and keep windows open.

The new simulator will prepare drivers for a new fleet of high-tech metro trains which will arrive in November.
