Queen's anniversary message to Jersey 70 years after liberation

The Queen has sent greetings to the people of Jersey 70 years after their liberation from German occupation.

The monarch said she remembered the pleasure of her parents when they were able to visit Jersey on 7th June 1945, one month after liberation, and the pleasure she had in attending with the Duke of Edinburgh the 60th anniversary in 2005.

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary we remember the many who suffered during the occupation of the Channel Islands, with all the hardships that went with that, including food shortages, deprivations of liberty and restrictions on ordinary everyday life.

Bells and street parties mark 70th VE Day anniversary

Communities and families up and down the country are throwing street parties today, to mark the seventieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Britain.

Church bells ring to mark 70th anniversary of VE Day

Church bells have been ringing out around the UK today as events to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day continue.

At 11am, cathedrals and churches across the country sounded their bells in a sign of victory, signifying the end to the years they had hung in silence during the Second World War:

'Flames of peace' lit across the UK to mark VE Day

Hundreds of beacons were lit across the United Kingdom at 9:32pm on Friday evening to mark the 70th anniversary of the announcement of the end of war in Europe.
