A violent drug dealer has been told he may never leave prison after being jailed for the brutal murder of a young mother while her daughter was in the room.

Lloyd Byfield, 48, launched a frenzied hammer and knife attack on Leighann Duffy, 26, in September last year after smashing his way into her flat in Walthamstow, east London.

He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 26-and-a-half years by Judge Nicholas Cooke, who told him he may spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Byfield - who then attacked Duffy's young daughter when she tried to intervene- - was told he must have had a "heart of stone" to commit the act.

The judge also expressed his "unhappiness" at the failure of authorities to deport Byfield back to Jamaica after he attacked another woman with a chisel and was jailed for buglary in 2005.
