Call to put mothers' names on marriage certificates

MPs have called on Home Secretary Theresa May to introduce laws to include the names of newlyweds' mothers on marriage certificates.

The move would end the "offensive and outdated message" that marriage is a "business transaction between fathers," said ministers the motion tabled in Parliament.

While marriage certificates in England and Wales currently have space for the details of the fathers of bride and grooms, their mothers' names are not specifically recorded.

The motion, which has so far been backed by 26 MPs from across the political spectrum, calls on May to act "without delay", stating: "Change is needed so that mothers are no longer erased from these important historical records."

A petition on the website calling for the names of mothers to be included alongside those of fathers has attracted more than 37,500 signatures.
