Aviation fuel spillage threatens Northumberland river

In the last 12 months, three lorries have overturned at the accident blackspot. This time, a tanker crashed into a ditch, spilling fuel that is now posing a threat to wildlife.

Trenches are being dug and booms put in place, to stop the fuel from seeping into the River Wansbeck.

The Environment Agency says that in a small stream that leads into the river, small wildlife - such as bugs - have already been killed.

Some fuel has reached the river but the Agency says that, so far, there are no signs of harm to wildlife in the Wansbeck.
