Newcastle City Pool 'swim-in'

Protests against the possible closure of Newcastle City Pool Credit: ITV

Hundreds of people have been protesting against the governement cuts in Newcastle. Swimmers turned out to stage a "swim in" in protest against cost cutting plans to close the City Pool in Newcastle.

Duncan Dollimore from Newcastle Swimming Club says the closure, which could be as early as March, flies in the face of the Olympic legacy.

Swimmers told ITV News Tyne Tees that the pool is a part of Newcastle's culture.

Newcastle City Council said they are still in the consultation process and that they cannot afford to maintain the building any longer.

"Newcastle City Council is currently consulting the public over a proposal to close the City Pool as there is an over-provision of pools in the city, and the council can no longer afford to carry out the repairs on the building. "Northumbria University has a new state-of-the-art pool only 250 meters away from the City Pool and would welcome any displaced swimmers. "Closing the city pool would enable the whole site to be marketed. Our budget proposals are still open to consultation."
