Family calls for change in law after careless driver who killed their father escapes jail
The family of a County Durham man say the law needs to be changed to prevent people convicted of Careless Driving escaping jail.
Brian Pattinson died from multiple injuries after the car he was in was involved in a crash near Ushaw Moor last year. The man responsible Michael Bristow admitted careless driving.
Bristow was given a community order, banned from driving for 12 months and given an £85 fine.
Mr Pattinson's family say that is an insult to his memory and are campaigning for the law to be changed and magistrates given more sentencing powers.
They are backing an online petition "stop dangerous drivers" which has been set-up by families across the country each with similar stories.
