Profile: Gus Poyet expected to become SAFC manager

Gus Poyet is expected to be announced as the new Sunderland manager, after positive talks with the club last week.

He would replace Paolo Di Canio who was sacked a fortnight ago after a 3-0 defeat to West Brom.

  • Gus Poyet is a former Uruguayan international midfielder.
  • He began his career in 1988 at Grenoble, France and then River Plate in Argentina.
  • He played for Chelsea from 1997 - 2001 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur where he played until 2004.
  • Poyet was manager of Brighton and Hove from 2008 - 2013. He was sacked in June after Brighton's defeat to Crystal Palace in the Championship play-off semi-finals.
  • If appointed, he would become the sixth man to hold the post on a permanent basis in the last five years.
