12-year-old boy died after being hit by a bus in Sunderland.

Police on Wearside say they received a report at 3.27 pm on Friday, November 22, that a child had been struck by a bus at Ryhope Street South in Sunderland, near to ASDA.

Emergency services attended but the local boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Inspector George Maratty said: "This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who died.

"Specialist officers are carrying out enquiries to establish exactly what has happened and specially trained officers are supporting the family of the boy. I would ask anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible."
