Sunderland’s Stadium of Light welcomed 52,000 spectators last night as One Direction began their UK tour on Wearside

The band, made up of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, performed a 22-song set. It included number one hit singles What Makes You Beautiful and Little Things.

The highly-anticipated show got underway with support act 5 Seconds of Summer, they warmed up the crowd with their hit She Looks So Perfect.

The spectacle included bursts of confetti, fireworks and a laser show.

One Direction are the most popular band in the world at the moment so to be able to welcome them to Sunderland was simply fantastic. It was one of the biggest shows we have ever staged at the Stadium of Light and the excitement around the region in the build up to the show was phenomenal.”
