This seat was formed prior to the 2010 General Election, taking in Sunderland city centre and the Ryhope area to the south. It includes the coastal community of Roker and the Stadium of Light.

The Sunderland seats have all been Labour since the 1960s, though this constituency includes substantial Conservative support.

Julie Elliot (Labour) won the seat in 2010. She was first elected that year and is standing again.

Labour: 19,495 (45.91%)

Conservative 12,770 (30.0%)

BNP: 1,913 (4.51%)

UKIP: 1,094 (2.58%)

Majority: 6,725 (15.84%)
