The constituency curls around the east of Newcastle and is made up of large local authority housing developments like Killingworth, Howden and Longbenton, which were built to house the overspill population from Newcastle.

It includes Wallsend town centre,an area that has had a long history of shipbuilding and coal mining.

Mary Glindon (Labour) was first elected in 2010 and is standing again.

The 2010 result:

Labour: 23,505 (50.7%)

Lib Dem: 10,621 (22.9%)

Conservative: 8,514 (18.3%)

BNP: 1,860 (4.0%)

UKIP: 1,306 (2.8%)

Others: 599 (1.3%)

Majority:12,884 (27.8%)
