Local businessman and former sports broadcaster Dave Roberts has confirmed that he intends to stand as Elected Mayor for ‘Teesside and Darlington’ under the ‘devolution deal’ agreed by the Government.

Mr Roberts announced his intentions as the Chancellor George Osborne unveiled plans for devolution, which would see the area receive a £15 million a year boost for the next 30 years.

The businessman has said that one of his key campaign objectives would be to press for the adoption of ‘Teesside and Darlington’ as the accepted identity for the area, which he hopes would attract more jobs and investment.

It would be a disaster if we went into the new era opening up for the area as a result of the devolution deal still without any clear identity.
