Hexham Railway Bridge closed for six weeks on Monday June 6 to allow Network Rail to undertake essential maintenance work. The closure means the A6079 - the main route in and out of the town - will also be closed for the duration of the works.

Northern Gas Networks will also replace a gas main and Northumberland County Council will take advantage of the closure to carry out resurfacing work.

Pedestrian access will be maintained over the bridge throughout the period of the work.

The closure comes after the line was forced to close for over a month due to a landslip following December's heavy rain.

The bridge closure means:

  • All diverted traffic will leave and enter Hexham either via the A695 (Hexham east) or the B6531 (Hexham west).

  • A temporary pedestrian crossing will be in place in Riding Mill on the A695 near to The Wellington Hotel

  • School transport pick-up times will be brought forward by 15 minutes to ensure that children are not late to school during the exam period

Residents are encouraged to make use of local bus services during the bridge closure.

The council is also urging daily commuters coming to Hexham by car to try and make arrangements to car share or to park at Tyne Green and walk over the bridge into the town centre.
