A power surge on the Tyne and Wear Metro has left thousands stranded and some passengers stranded on trains.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s control room received a call at 13.01 reporting smoke on platform one of Monument Metro station in Newcastle city centre. Five fire crews from Newcastle Central, Gosforth and Gateshead were dispatched to the scene.
The power to the Metro line was shut down while firefighters worked with Nexus staff to lead 71 passengers and the driver on a train stuck in the tunnel at Monument to safety above ground.
All inner city Newcastle stations have been disrupted by the incident.
