Work to begin on memorial garden for famous First World War family

Work is to begin on a memorial garden in remembrance of County Durham’s most famous First World War family.

Roland and George Bradford were the only siblings in the 1914 to 1918 conflict to be awarded Victoria Crosses, while brother James won a Military Cross and Thomas a Distinguished Service Order.

On the 100th anniversary of Roland’s bravery in the face of the enemy , trustees, friends and associates of the Durham Light Infantry will gather to break ground in the village of Witton Park on what will become home to two of the county’s seven commemorative Victoria Cross stones.

Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration, arts and culture, said:
