Citizens Advice say they are expecting a rise in the number of people seeking help after Universal Credit is introduced in Newcastle.

The single monthly payment will replace a number of benefits, including:

  • Jobseekers' Allowance

  • Child Tax Credit

  • Housing Benefits

  • Income Support

  • Working Tax Credit

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Advisors say the change is likely to cause confusion over what people are eligible to claim.

Newcastle is one of the first places in the country to introduce the new payment.

A government spokesperson said the new system will help people move into work faster.
