New parking charges for Seaton Carew, despite protest

Drivers will soon have to pay to park in Seaton Carew - despite a petition opposing the plans receiving more than three thousand signatures.

From April, charges of £1 for up to 2 hours, £1.50 for up to 4 hours and £2 all day will apply from April 1st - October 31st in the Coronation Drive, Rocket House and Coach Park car parks.

Other measures agreed by Hartlepool Council include resident-only parking schemes in the Crawford Street/Church Street area and designated streets to the north of Station Lane.

There will also be pay and display parking at various points along The Front, The Cliff and Coronation Drive.

It is estimated that these new measures will generate £140,000 for the council.

Hartlepool Council said the charges are only on a trial basis and all feedback will be taken into account. at the end of the seven month period.

Cllr Marjorie James, Chair of the Neighbourhood Services Committee, acknowledged opposition to the new parking charges, including a 3,500-name petition.

She stressed that the issue wasn’t only about money and that the wider Parking Plan would help to tackle a range of parking issues - including parking on pavements and on the chevrons in the centre of the road on The Front – which affect businesses and people’s safe enjoyment of Seaton Carew.

“However, it isn’t just about The Front and that is why we have developed this Parking Plan. I think it takes a balanced approach in recognising the different needs of visitors, residents and businesses.”
