Disruption to British Airways flights extends to the North East.

All British Airways flights to Newcastle from Heathrow Airport have been cancelled.

Flights due to depart before 6pm down to Heathrow from Newcastle have also been affected.

The airline say it is due to a "major IT system failure":

The terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick have become extremely congested and we have cancelled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick before 6pm UK time today, so please do not come to the airports

We apologise to customers who are facing some delays following an IT outage this morning.

We are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

– British Airways statement

Travellers have been advised to check the airline's website and Twitter account for updates about the situation.

There have been reports that the global IT problem is the result of a cyber attack but BA said there is "no evidence" that this is the case.

Some people have taken to social media to vent their frustration at the issues they have been experiencing, while others are left hanging in the balance as to whether their flight will go ahead.
