It's understood that nearby houses are without power as a result of the fire.

Janice Trinnion, who lives nearby said black smoke is hanging in the air.

I was coming home from the gym and the road was blocked so I had to get through via the A69 near Heddon-on-the-Wall.

When I finally got through, there was a lot of black smoke.

A fire engine managed to get the fire under control."

In a statement police say the fire has been isolated.

We have been assisting firefighters with a small electrical fire on the junction of Hexham Road and Coach Road in Throckley.

The fire has now been isolated but traffic still a bit congested and officers are on scene to manage the diversions currently in place.

It was initially reported on social media that this was an explosion but that is not the case and no members of the public are at risk or have been injured.

Officers will remain in the area this evening to reassure anyone in the area who has any concerns."
