Calls have been made to revamp Sunderland's railway station, which one Labour MP says gives a poor welcome to visitors to the city.

Julie Elliott, the MP for Sunderland Central, has written to Network Rail asking it to part-fund a multi-million pound redevelopment of the station.

Sunderland will host the Tall Ships race next summer and is among five cities hoping to become City of Culture in 2021.
