Tributes have been paid to one of Tyne Tees' most popular presenters, Andrew Friend.

Andrew, who has died aged 54, became a familiar - and well-loved - face when he joined the channel in the early 1990s.

He took on a series of roles at Tyne Tees, including reporter, producer, presenter and senior manager.

He also oversaw the Tyne Tees move from City Road in Newcastle to its current home at The Watermark in Gateshead.

Andrew co-presented the evening news programme with Pam Royle, who said he will be remembered for his huge sense of fun and consideration for others:

I very fondly remember Andrew's intellect, wit, warm personality, generosity of spirit, and ability to bring out the best in everyone. He was also a brilliant mentor to so many people at the start of their careers. Most of all, he was a very dear friend. We lived through some of the happiest times at Tyne Tees Television together. We will miss him so much.

Graeme Thompson, Tyne Tees' former managing director, added:

He was an absolute pleasure to work with, very, very quick-witted, lovely warm infectious sense of humour with a great ability to work with the team and keep everybody on side.

– Graeme Thompson, former Tyne Tees managing director

In latter years Andrew worked in Australia and at Made In Tyne and Wear as its regional head of news.
