Nissan's former chairman Carlos Ghosn has been charged by prosecutors in Tokyo with under-reporting his income, according to Japanese media.
Another executive and the carmaker itself have also been charged.
Mr Ghosn was arrested over allegations of financial misconduct on 19th November. He was accused of using company assets for personal use and under-reporting his pay.
Nissan employs more than 6,000 workers on Wearside.
