A teenager has appeared in court to deny murdering a 62-year-old shop worker in Sunderland.

Ethan Mountain is accused of stabbing great-grandmother Joan Hoggett while she was on duty at the One Stop Shop on Sea Road in Sunderland on September 5.

The 19-year-old, of Heaton Gardens, South Shields, South Tyneside, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via video link to HMP Manchester for a short hearing on Monday December 17.

Mountain pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder.

Judge Paul Sloan QC said a further hearing will take place on January 14 and a trial by jury has been listed for March 5.

Judge Sloan told Mountain:

"I am going to adjourn your case for a further pre-trial hearing. That hearing will be listed on January 14.

You will be linked in on that date, as you have been today.

Pending the hearing on January 14, you will be remanded in custody."
