Neighbours of a woman who was found dead in a County Durham home say she was a mum-of-two.

Detectives say they are treating the death, in Carrville, near Durham City as 'suspicious'.

Police were called to Bainbridge Street at just before 4.30pm on Friday where the body of a 39-year-old woman was found. A 35-year-old man has been questioned by police.

On Sunday, the end terraced house was still cordoned off, while forensics officers could be seen working at the scene. Neighbours told ChronicleLive a couple lived at the house with a young boy. And they said they believed the dead woman was a mum-of-two.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said:

I think they have lived there just over a year and a half. The woman has got two children. The neighbour, who has lived on Bainbridge Street for 18 years, said she noticed police at the house early on Saturday morning. There were about four police vans, then it was cordoned off.

I saw a man being taken away in a car, then I saw an ambulance in the afternoon. The forensics were there again this morning. It was a shock to see all that, there has never been trouble like that."

The woman said the row of terraced houses were once home to local families who had lived there all their lives, but over recent years a lot had been sold on and there was a lot of coming and going on the once quiet street.

At once time it was all well-established people down here.

It's just gone from bad to worse over the last 18 years, it's really sad."

Neil Smith lives next door to the house the police were at. He found out what had happened when officers called at his door.

The 38-year-old said:

The police came round to ask if I had heard anything. It was quite a shock. When the officer arrived I said; 'Has there been a shed burglary or something?' And he said; 'It's a little more serious than that'.

I think a couple live in the house but I have only lived here a couple of months and I have never really spoken to them."
