Man arrested after 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Normanby

A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after a teenage girl was attacked as she walked along a wooded path in Normanby.

The incident happened on Sunday night when a 14-year-old girl was on a path next to Ormesby Road, between the junction of Cricket Lane and Normanby Hall Park.

Cleveland Police said on Wednesday that the man from Middlesbrough has been detained and remains in police custody.

Officers investigating the assault have been carrying out a number of lines of inquiry, including house to house and exploring CCTV opportunities in the area around where the incident took place.

The victim and her family are being supported by specialist officers.

A police spokesperson said:

A 39-year-old man from the Middlesbrough area has today been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault following a report of an incident in Normanby on Sunday February 17 involving a 14-year-old girl.

The man remains in police custody at this time."
