The family of a young County Durham man who drowned in an Amsterdam canal say they may never know how he came to be in the water.
Daniel, known as 'Dan', was a talented and popular footballer, who played for South Tyneside’s Harton and Westoe FC. He'd been away on holiday with friends last May when he fell into a river and could not be saved.
At his inquest, a coroner told his family she was sorry she couldn't give them the answers they needed.
- The inquest heard Daniel did have alcohol and illegal drugs in his blood, but none at the level from which someone would be expected to die
- The coroner also said there was no evidence, as reported by some media, that Daniel and his friends had fallen out or that he'd been seen urinating into the canal
Tens of thousands of pounds was raised on a fundraising page set up by the public in the days after his death, to fly Daniel's body home from the Netherlands.
But almost a year on, his family are still unclear as to what actually happened that fateful night.
